White Leghorn Pullet

White Leghorn Pullet

The White Leghorn is a highly productive and hardy chicken breed, known for its sleek white feathers and exceptional egg-laying ability. Originally from Italy, it is one of the most popular commercial laying breeds worldwide.

Key Features:

  • Appearance: White Leghorns have sleek, white feathers and a slim, athletic build. They have a single comb and a bright red wattle. Their bodies are streamlined, with long wings and tails, giving them an energetic, graceful appearance.

  • Size: White Leghorns are a lightweight breed, with hens typically weighing around 4-5 lbs and roosters about 5-6 lbs. Their slim frame and active nature make them agile and efficient foragers.

  • Egg Production: One of the primary reasons White Leghorns are so popular is their prolific egg production. They can lay 280-320 white eggs per year, often starting at an early age. Their reliable egg-laying makes them a top choice for both small-scale and commercial egg production.

  • Temperament: While White Leghorns are generally friendly, they are known to be more active and independent than other breeds. They are not as cuddly or docile as some other breeds, but they are calm and handle well, especially when raised in a positive environment.

  • Hardiness: White Leghorns are very hardy and adapt well to different climates. They are resistant to many poultry diseases and are excellent foragers, making them well-suited for free-range environments. They are also heat-tolerant, which makes them ideal for warmer climates.

Summary:

The White Leghorn is a highly productive, slim, and hardy chicken breed, known for laying a high number of white eggs annually. With a calm but independent temperament, they are well-suited for both backyard flocks and commercial egg production. Their excellent foraging ability and hardiness make them adaptable to various environments.
