Ancona

Ancona

The Ancona is a beautiful, lively, and hardy Mediterranean breed known for its striking mottled plumage and excellent egg-laying ability. With their glossy black feathers sprinkled with white tips, Anconas stand out visually while also being one of the most dependable layers among light Mediterranean breeds.

Ancona hens are prolific producers, laying 220–280 medium to large white eggs per year. They are active, alert foragers that thrive in free-range environments and help control insects naturally. Their energetic nature makes them excellent homestead birds, especially for those who prefer independent, self-sufficient chickens.

Despite their activity level, Anconas are friendly and curious once accustomed to their keepers. They handle warm climates very well and remain hardy in cooler weather thanks to their strong genetics and Mediterranean heritage. Their beauty, productivity, and resilience make the Ancona a wonderful addition to diverse and free-ranging flocks.
