Welsummer Pullet

The Welsummer is a medium-sized chicken breed known for its beautiful plumage and excellent egg-laying ability. Originating in the Netherlands, Welsummers are particularly prized for their ability to lay large, dark brown eggs, often with a unique speckled appearance.

Key Features:

  • Appearance: Welsummers have rich, reddish-brown or golden feathers with a glossy sheen, often highlighted with darker markings. Their bodies are well-proportioned and robust, with a calm and dignified posture. They have a medium-sized, sturdy frame and a single comb.

  • Size: Welsummer hens typically weigh around 5-6 lbs, while roosters weigh around 6-7 lbs. They are a solid, medium-sized breed with good proportions.

  • Egg Production: One of the main attractions of the Welsummer is its ability to lay large, dark brown eggs, often with a speckled or mottled appearance. They typically lay about 180-250 eggs per year, making them reliable layers.

  • Temperament: Welsummers are friendly and calm, though they can be a bit more independent and less docile than some other breeds. They are good foragers and enjoy free-ranging, making them a great choice for backyard flocks that allow their chickens to roam.

  • Hardiness: Welsummers are hardy birds that do well in a variety of climates. They are relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in both warm and cooler weather with proper shelter.

Summary:

The Welsummer is a beautiful and productive chicken breed known for its large, dark brown, often speckled eggs. With a friendly yet independent temperament, they make a great addition to backyard flocks, offering both ornamental value and excellent egg production.
