Austra White Pullet

The Austra White is a high-production, white-feathered chicken breed that is a hybrid cross between the Black Australorp and the White Leghorn. Developed primarily for commercial egg production, the Austra White is known for its exceptional egg-laying abilities and hardy nature.

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance:

    • Feathers: Austra Whites have sleek, white feathers with a clean, uniform appearance. They are generally very similar in look to White Leghorns.
    • Size: They are a medium-sized breed, with hens weighing around 5–6 pounds (2.3–2.7 kg), making them somewhat smaller than other dual-purpose breeds.
    • Comb: They typically have a single comb, which is common among egg-laying breeds.
  • Temperament:

    • Austra Whites are generally docile and calm, but they can be a bit more active and independent compared to some other backyard breeds. They are not overly aggressive but can be less social than more friendly breeds.
    • They are generally easy to handle and adapt well to different environments, but they do tend to be more flighty than heavier breeds.
  • Egg Production:

    • Austra Whites are renowned for their high egg production, typically laying white eggs with impressive frequency. They can produce 250–300 eggs per year, making them a top choice for egg production in commercial settings and among home flocks looking for consistent output.
  • Hardiness:

    • This breed is hardy and adapts well to a variety of climates. They do well in both hot and cold weather, though they are most commonly raised in temperate regions. Their small size and efficient metabolism help them cope with heat better than heavier breeds.
  • Purpose:

    • Primarily bred for egg production, Austra Whites are valued for their ability to produce large quantities of eggs, and they are commonly found in commercial egg-laying operations. While they are not as well-known for meat production, they can still provide a decent yield if needed.

Notable Points:

  • The Austra White is an excellent choice for those seeking high egg production in a hardy, low-maintenance chicken.
  • They are sometimes used in commercial egg farms but can also be kept by backyard poultry enthusiasts who prioritize egg production over other characteristics like meat yield or temperament.
